Rescue Me ID: 18-04-19-00043Lightning (male)

Beagle Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Lightning was born about March 6, 2015 and may fill out to about 25 lbs. He is adorable and so very sweet! He is wonderful with the other dogs and would enjoy one in his next home. He would also enjoy a fenced yard as with most Beagles he may follow his nose when the urge strikes. Someone is going to be very happy they found this cutie! This is all we know so far and will be learning as we go. The southern shelter does not ask questions on intake since they feel it is embarrassing since the area is so poverty stricken that the reason is most often financial. Update: When we were doing photos we 'felt' that Lightning may be a year ... (Read More)or two older than what we were told. Another Update: This guy is SO adorable! As I write this he is in the yard playing with a ball all by himself. We simply love this little boy and someone out there is going to be so happy to see this post!!! The Adoption Fee for this dog is $350.00. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-04-19-00042Layla (female)

Papillon Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Layla was born about December 26, 2012 and weighs about 12 lbs. which is just a tad overweight for her. She is absolutely adorable and just as sweet as can be! She is very warm in your lap in the evening after the day is done. Layla is fine with other dogs and would be fine with dog friends in her next life or as an only dog as long as her humans are around much of the time. We have discovered, what we feel, are luxating patellas likely in both back legs. This is a condition that is very common in small breed dogs and the norm is to manage the pain, if there is any, when this becomes irritating to the dog. Layla was adopted to a young ... (Read More)retired elderly woman with another dog and things went well until her elderly mother was in the hospital and two dogs became too much of a burden. The good thing about her having a home for just over two months is that we now know more about her. Layla is house trained and fine on leash. She is a bit nervous in a car and riding in a car seat or a crate would be best. Her favorite time to play with her human is when she comes back in the house. She can be barky when inside looking out and on walks it's fun to bark at people cars and birds. It seems she just wants everyone to look her way and tell her she's the cutest ever! She lost a little weigh while gone and could stand to loose another pound. A lifelong lower weight would benefit from the luxating patellas that the owner did have diagnosed. The left side is graded to what the vet felt should be surgically corrected, but we disagree. This little girl shows no pain and goes up and down the flight of stairs in this house just fine. Once again, we feel that a wait and see attitude is the best for any surgery decision. If her weight is kept down we suspect she will be fine going forward. She's lived with it this long and surgery should be a last resort. Layla was her happy, fun, funny, self upon arrival back - she fit right back in, but still does need a real home at some point. Layla did better on a grain free food and occasional probiotics to keep her stools more normal. She's a love and we are sorry we chose the wrong home for her the first time, but we promised to make it up to her the second time around. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-04-19-00041Imogene (female)

Corgi Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Imogene was born around February 7, 2014 and weighs 15 lbs. Imogene was thought to be a Jack Russell mix at the shelter and the vet went along the lines more of a Corgi, but we'd like to throw in some Feist and feel she is likely a mix of all 3 and then some. Whatever her heritage she sure is a cutie and we are so glad we were able to save her. She is fun, funny, happy, and wonderful with all the other dogs. Imogene becomes a nice lap buddy in the evening to watch a little TV and the best part of her is that she makes silly, cute, little noises to get your attention - love her! Update: Imogene came back because the gentleman in the ... (Read More)home wanted a buddy to go to his shop. Perhaps it was a wood shop and the loud noises scared her awful! So, he would have to leave her in the house most of the day all by herself and she would chew on things she shouldn't. Sadly, she came back more timid than when she had left, but she sure lit up when she saw Maggie!!!! She almost wiggled out of her skin. It's such a compliment to us when a dog remembers us and is so very happy to see us again, makes us very happy. We were told that she would flip on her back whenever one of them approached and that is a submissive behavior that it a compliment to the human, but it was annoying that she did it so often they could barely get her upright to hook a leash. She is house trained, find on leash once she's up and going, she loves car rides and is amazing with other dogs. We'd like to place her in a home with another confident dog this time around so she will have a clear leader. She seems fine with the noise from my blender chopping ice every morning, but wood saws can be much louder. We were also told the man had a deep voice and that may have been part of the problem. We are glad to have her back and will try to find a better placement going forward. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-04-05-00050Titus (male)

Doberman Pinscher    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

My Owner Passed Away. Titus was born about January 24, 2014 and has weighed in the range of 84-110 lbs. according to medical records. He was a well loved guy and had an inside home with another dog and then suddenly his mid-age owner passed away leaving an 85 year old woman caring for the two dogs. She did relinquish them to a local rescue in Kentucky who reached out to us so we could find them a better home up north than where they may have ended up. It's wonderful we do have information on them and this is what we've been told about Titan: He is house trained and goes to the door to let you know. He is also crate trained, but it ... (Read More)better be a big one as this is one big boy! The home had been the only home he had known. He has been fine with all of us and the other dogs - small and large. He was not well behaved when a saw a kitty on his walk one day so no cats. He knows sit and true to his breed he is on the active side and on the nervous side, but surely he'll calm some once he is adjusted to a new home and realizes the changes are over. He does seem to be on the busy side. We are told he comes when called and does not jump fences. Looking on googlemaps where he used to live there seems to be a fence, but a flimsy one so that is a good sign that he's not much of a runner. Titus has no bite history. About a year ago he did have an oral tumor removed and it came back benign. He came to us with some spots of hair loss that cannot be identified, perhaps it's from the stress. We hope with good good and a normal life the spots will fill in. As with any normal Dobie he can be protective of his humans and his home. We can see the confusion in his eyes as he looks at us and SO wants to love us completely, there are just so many other dogs here to share the humans with that he can't. He will be totally devoted to you when he is settled and I'm sure very grateful. He's going to make someone very, very, happy. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-04-05-00049Nina (female)

Fox Terrier Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Nina was born about December 4, 2017 and will likely weigh in the 30 lb. range, but truly we are REALLY guessing here as we have no clue of parentage. What we do know is that the 'N' Hall puppies are very loving, friendly, and full of life. They are going to be a lot of fun for their new families! This is all we know so far as we are learning as we go and so will you. The southern shelter feels it is embarrassing to ask humans why they must relinquish their dogs as the reason is so often financial in the coal mining area of Virginia.

Fox Terrier Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Brille was born about November 21, 2017 and we are guessing she'll top out in the __ lb. range when full grown. However, please understand that we are TRULY guessing at breed and ultimate size so if you don't like surprises pup is not for you. She is sweet, fun & funny and we are in love as you will be too. Her mom is our Courtney who is a love! Courtney and her 11 day old babies were dropped off at a high kill facility because they were moving. This is all we know so far as the southern high kill pound doesn't ask any questions on intake as the reason is so often financial and embarrassing. We will be learning as we go and so will ... (Read More)you. UPDATE FROM FOSTER MOM: (Brillie): She is precious. Loves to be held but also the center of play time. She plays tug of war with all of the dogs or pups and will take on a bone twice her size. She has a most unique way of talking. Almost sounds like a bird singing. (Less)

Pug Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Looking for unique? Rascal East was born around April 13, 2013 and weighs about 12 pounds. We are told his mother was a Pug and father was a Poodle and we have to believe it based on his adorable looks. Rascal is with us because his previous owners allowed him to run loose and the local dog control officer said they needed to remedy the issue. Rascal is wonderful with the other dogs and loves children of all ages. He rides nicely in the car and walks well on leash. He will need to have fenced yard as his curiosity gets the best of him when he is outside. At the end of the day he is ready to cuddle up with you and watch TV. Someone is ... (Read More)going to be head over heels in love and certainly be the topic of discussion among dog lovers in the neighborhood. FOSTER UPDATE: What a love!! Rascal talks to me all the time telling me all about his day. He is housebroken and shows no interest in our cat. He ocassionally plays with the other dogs, but he is happiest being near (or on!) his humans. He was wonderful with my toddler grandchildren. One looks at that face and your heart melts!! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-01-19-00049Hucksley (male)

Yorkie Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

I'm Here Due to Owner Knee Replacement. Hucksley was born about November 12, 2007 and weighs about 11 lbs. He is cute as can be and still full of energy, love to play and wonderful with other dogs. He is good on leash, and loves car rides. Hucksley has been fine with children, but can be snippy around food once in a while. He has some separation anxiety and when caged too long he has broken some of his teeth. So, he'd like his human around much of the time. He are told he has too much interest in cats to live with any. As with so many small dogs Hucksley struggles with house training and will benefit from having potty floor pads ... (Read More)handy. Also, with so many small dogs he holds up one back leg at times and that is likely a luxating patella (kneecap). It is highly unlikely any veterinarian would require surgery at his age and being so tiny. (Less)

Yorkie Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Seymour Sandwich Bread was born about October 4, 2009 and weighs about 9 lbs. He is as cute as they come and has just been released from her puppy making days in a puppy mill in West Virginia. The 'millers' made a call to the humane society and said they no longer needed the services of 29 dogs and would they take them. The shelter is a kill shelter due to space and could not handle so many dogs and so they asked if we would take them. How could we not! So, we squeezed and adjusted and were able to take them all and they are doing wonderfully. Still shy, some more than others, and will need house training. Some of their teeth were ... (Read More)just horrendous and we will be have them cleaned once, but please understand that when teeth, in these small dogs, have been neglected this badly another cleaning or two is likely in the not so distant future. We love to rescue mill dogs as when you see them turn that corner and decide that they LOVE you, the human, you can see the sparkle in their eyes and it brings tears to our eyes. He is wonderful with the other dogs. (Less)

Pekingese Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Dale was born about November 2, 2008 and weighs about 12 lbs. She can be rather picky about her four legged friends and maybe would do best with one other small aloof dog or as an only dog. She adores her humans but we do not feel she should live with small children. We have no information on why she ended up at the high kill shelter, but she was a matted mess and just covered with fleas so now that she is healing and flea free her fur is growing back in and she'll be gorgeous again one day. She is happy, funny, and just loves to be loved. Someone is going to be very happy that she made this journey! This is all we know so far and ... (Read More)we'll all be learning as we go. We do like to warn that many of these small dogs do benefit from having floor potty pads handy for when they just can't hold it. (Less)

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Anastasia was born about January 9, 2016 and weighs about 27 lbs. Anastasia is a snuggler and she ADORES water! She uses the doggie door with ease, but we like to let you know that with the next move and an adjustment to not having a dog door that you may have some house training work ahead. Anna, as we call her, adores her humans and she is wonderful with the other dogs. She is BUSY and has stuff to do in life. This isn't a girl that is going to lounge around napping in a crate all day. She needs a fun dog and a safe place to race and race she does. If there are kids they need to be sturdy. Deciding on breed is difficult here, ... Jack Russell Mix

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

I'm Really Kind of Sweet! Jack was born about December 22, 2004 or in 2008....and he weighs about 10 lbs. So, he was picked up stray and his owner was located by his rabies tag, but they had no interest in bailing him out from dog control so we did. This poor little old man needed a safe place to fall! OK, the age thing, well the owner told the town that he was 7, but the vet that boosted his rabies shot for us feels he is about 11 so his birthday will be up to you! He is really sweet and loves to snuggle in your lap. He is just wonderful with the other dogs here, but struggled when he went to another home, particularly with a Beagle ... (Read More)as there was some food aggression. He seldom says a peep which we just love, but maybe he can't hear well, we've not been able to determine that, but it is obvious that his eyes have some old age cloudiness so his eyesight isn't what it used to be. He doesn't care, he gets around just fine. He is good on leash and ok in a crate, but not sure why you would need one. We are so glad he is here with us and we know we are going to find him an excellent home for the rest of his life where someone will love him and never let him wander freely. Jack did well on our cat test, but the other home said he didn't like their cat - sometimes confusing. (Less)
